  3.     The idea that Mahin Root, whose father is white and mother
  4. black (NATION, Sept. 4), should be classified by a "rule of
  5. reason" or an "eyeball" test merely plays to the entrenched,
  6. racist "one drop" theory that has been used for centuries to
  7. avoid dealing with interracial realities in this country. My
  8. father was black and my mother white. Throughout my life, I have
  9. consistently refused to make a choice when faced with forms that
  10. ask my race. Most times I ignore the space, and other times I
  11. check both black and white. The real selection the individual
  12. is being asked to make is between parents and cultures, not a
  13. decision any biracial child should ever be forced to make.
