- LETTERS, Page 9Eyeballing Mankind
-
- The idea that Mahin Root, whose father is white and mother
- black (NATION, Sept. 4), should be classified by a "rule of
- reason" or an "eyeball" test merely plays to the entrenched,
- racist "one drop" theory that has been used for centuries to
- avoid dealing with interracial realities in this country. My
- father was black and my mother white. Throughout my life, I have
- consistently refused to make a choice when faced with forms that
- ask my race. Most times I ignore the space, and other times I
- check both black and white. The real selection the individual
- is being asked to make is between parents and cultures, not a
- decision any biracial child should ever be forced to make.
